Digital - SET SUBJECT - Hi Key
A high-key image is one that is almost entirely very bright, with very little, or no dark shadows present. A high-key image is exposed so that the key tones are lighter than the mid-tone ideal. This means that shadows are brighter and more open and the image usually has a light airy feel.

Slight change to our original idea...
If you have one, please bring along a laptop, if not bring 5 images on a USB device. Select 5 images you would like some guidance with, so it would be best if it is images you really like and not sure how to edit etc.

What we will do on the night is discuss with you the following;

  • Composition of your image
  • Basic Editing improvements (using either LR or Camera Raw (Ps))
  • Camera settings, what they were, why you used them
  • How to size your images for competition

Competition Meeting
Monday 26th April
7:00pm at U3A
Digital – Open
Digital - Set Subject - Portrait
Open: Subject matter is free, as is use of colour, or lack of colour, or partial colour. Experimental techniques are fine as this is not genre specific. Just be impressive. It can be “overflow” from that month’s set subject as well, whatever rocks your boat!
PEOPLE/PORTRAITS:
PEOPLE - People must dominate this image, could be people at work, or play
PORTRAITS - Portraiture aims toward capturing the personality of a person or group of people by using effective lighting, backdrops, and poses. In a portrait the face and its expression dominate. A portrait may be artistic or clinical.

More details to come

Competition Meeting
Monday 28th June
7:00pm at U3A
Digital - Open Mono
Digital - Set Subject – Creative
MONO : The image is made up of blacks, whites and shades of grey, or shades of one colour. No use of selective colour (when you remove all colours except Black and White and one other eg. red) as this is a “duochrome* ” with shade of black and white and shades of red and white.
“Monochrome” can be achieved using varying shades of other colours like sepia or cyan, but the whole image is sepia, or cyan etc…
Removing colour from a picture helps the viewer to focus on a subject's emotional state, or can evoke emotions about a subject.
Hint: in B&W aim to include really white whites and very black blacks somewhere in your image to avoid it being muddy grey.
CREATIVE: Let your imagination go! This could be "straight" photography, or Photoshopped to a million degrees, or composite, but it needs to be interesting and have impact and must have started out within your camera. Have fun with this one.
Dictionary definition: Creative adjective creative manipulation of image: inventive, imaginative, innovative, experimental, original; artistic, expressive, inspired, visionary…

Competition Meeting
Monday 26th July moved to 23rd August
7:00pm at U3A
Digital - Open
Digital - Set Subject – Low Key
A low key image is one that contains predominantly dark tones and colours. A low-key image is one in which the key tones are darker than the mid-tone ideal. Like high key images, low key photography conveys atmosphere and mood. But where a high-key image feels airy and light, a low-key is usually dramatic and full of mystery.
See also Hi Key in Subject definitions.

Competition Meeting
DON'T FORGET YOUR MASK!
Monday 25th  October
7:00pm at U3A
Digital - Open Mono
Digital - Open Colour
Digital - Set Subject – Abstract
Abstract images must have started within your camera. Abstraction aims to create an emotional response in the viewer where the original subject is no longer clear. The subject may be natural, or manufactured. If you don’t recognise the subject, quite likely it’s an abstract. Whilst it may be the essence of the original, it may be something new altogether.
The image may have been the result of movement, either camera, or subject. It does not have to be blurry; it may be crisp and sharp. It may be a fragment of a whole.
Abstraction may include some, many, or all the elements of Art… line, colour, texture, shape, form, space, light and dark. Composition may, or may not, be obvious.
Semi-abstraction is where a portion of "reality" remains and is quite acceptable.
